I was lucky enough to be out photographing when this flower was in bloom. This Cereus cactus flower also known as (princess of the night and queen of the night) blooms in July and only at night.

I was out taking advantage of the cooler morning light when I happened upon it. It was the only time I saw this cactus flower in bloom during our stay in Kona, HI.

I read up on it later and discovered how truly lucky I was to get to see it in bloom. Previous days and the days thereafter, when I drove by this same area around the same time of day, the flower was closed and drooped downward. It resemblemed a group of limp banana peels and appeared dead. It was quite unsightly.
