Description
I was commissioned to do a painting that represented Psalms 23. I did two versions. This one and the one called Green Pastures 1.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me... Psalm 23
The green pastures weren't green like we think of green pastures. The shepherds back then and still to this day guide their flocks around rocky hills. It doesn't look green at all. The hills look barren except for the rocks and the well-worn trails made by the sheep. What isn't visible from a distance is the sprigs of grass next to each convergence of rocks. They are on the move eating as they went from one rocky out cropping to another following their shepherd from one sprig of grass to the next sprig of grass completely dependent on the shepherd's guidance to satisfy each and every sheep that followed him.
He makes me lie down in green pastures...
That means, even if all looks barren and rocky, we can confidently rest with a peace that goes beyond understanding and a knowing that our Shepherd will protect us and will provide for our every need.
He leads me beside quiet waters...
Sheep will not drink from a rushing stream. Their self-preservation will kick in and they will refuse to drink even if they are thirsty. A shepherd cares for the well-being of his sheep and will guide them to safe, quiet drinking waters so they will take in the restorative, life-giving water.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. - John 10:27
