Description
Sydney Museum and Art Gallery asked me to design the back of playing cards that they will be selling for a charity. The reverse image was hand done and shows slight variations in its designs. Compare the two halves and see if you can find the differences.
The gallery wanted it to have a Port Orchard theme so I put things in the design that represent Port Orchard. See if you can find them:
1. Blue Herons
2. Starfish
3. Sand dollars
4. Anchors - representing the marinas and view of the naval shipyards
5. Salmon - Every year salmon find their way back to rivers they came from and every year you'll see fishermen along the mouth of the rivers, standing in the water waist deep. It's pretty cool to see the fish jumping too.
6. Totem poles - representing the local Indians. The totem pole in Port Orchard was carved by a member of the Mekah tribe of Neah Bay.
7. Eagles - there are many Bald Eagles that live by the water
8. Clouds - it does rain a lot here (or so foreigners say.)
9. Crab and crabpot - representing commercial fishing and private pots
10. Waves and currents - Port Orchard sits along The Sound. The tide comes in and out all day long
11. My name - gotta sign it somewhere
A little about Port Orchard:
The Port Orchard area was first settled in 1854 by Wiliam Renton and Daniel Howard, who set up a saw mill there. The town that was to become Port Orchard was originally platted in 1886 by Frederick Stevens, who named the new location after his father, Sidney. The town of Sidney was incorporated September 15, 1890, and was the first in Kitsap County to be both platted and incorporated. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Navy sought a suitable location for another installation on the west coast, and found it with the assistance of Sidney's residents in Orchard Bay (this installation would later become the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard).
