Description
This painting was originally going to be an urban painting. You can still see remnants of the street from a birds-eye-view in the background. It looks like an outlined 'x'. I converted it to a horse painting because I didn't like the way the previous painting was going. It is the first horse painting I have ever done in watercolor. I wanted to paint a horse that looked like it was pressing into the wind determined to go forward no matter what. The red was to emphasize the energy and determination. Horses normally run with the necks outstretched because they need more air and do not breath through their mouth. With his neck tucked a little, I am emphasizing the amount of wind that the horse is up against.
It was so much fun to create because I was just playing around trying new things on a ruined background thinking it was going to go in the trash anyway. But, to my surprise, it turned out great. I discovered a creative solution to fixing a ruined painting and had a blast doing it too. This Red horse painting set me off on a path of creating more horse paintings and drawings.
In 2012, this horse painting got first place in the Emerald Downs Equine Art Show and received the cover award for the Emerald Downs magazine, Washington Thoroughbred, and graced their August cover.
I enter this painting into another prestigious show, but it wasn't accepted. In the meanwhile, I had a buyer interested in the original painting and sold it to them.
I've entered this award winning painting into a book contest for watercolors called Splash 15, Creative Solutions. I will find out if I am one of 600 artists chosen to be considered for the book in March of 2013.
Update: this painting was chosen to be in the watercolor book and the book will be available in July 2014.
