Description
I titled this piece Men At Work because what many see as a tropical vacation spot, the locals see as a place of work. The contrast of these fishermen pulling a boat up onto a beautiful and serene beach intrigued me and so I chose to give this piece brightness and color to further enhance the contrast.
This painting was a transitional painting for me; an Ah-ha moment because it was the first time that I painted something with only three primary colors and also chose, for the first time, to paint with only transparent colors.
A group of painters I painted with on a weekly basis decided to paint the same subject just to see what everyone would come up with. One of the painters had a photo from her Mexico trip. It was mostly brown and dull in color and there wasn't any houses or trees in the background, but the subject was good. There was about eight of us painting this image. I decided to try to paint a whole painting with only three transparent colors. Cobalt (blue), New Gamboge (yellow), and Rose Madder Genuine (red). When layering the color onto the paper it made it darker and less transparent. Also, I was able to create any color I wanted because they were primary colors with just those three colors.
After everyone finished their painting and when we met the following week, we placed our paintings on the floor next to each other. It was amazing to see the variety and how differently everyone painted their paintings of the exact same picture.
