Description
I have a confession. I drown out the sounds of the birds singing by sleeping with a fan. Otherwise, the chorus of bird calls would wake me up at 4am.
It keeps me liking birds and willing to paint them. I think the Robins have one of the worst bird calls. A monotonous and torturous chirp. The Chickadees make quite a racket as well. I wrote a poem about this:
A Major Bird
by Jani
Of course, this is meant as tongue in cheek.
My reason is just to get a full night's sleep.
I like to hear a bird sing.
It's the sound of a new season and the sound of spring.
But birds, please wait until the sun and I have actually risen.
Your sound at 4am is prison.

Okay, so I am not an amazing poet.
This reminds me of a real poet's poem. He clapped his hands in mid day trying to silence a song. I postpone it with white noise. The difference? He was depressed (or so the interpretations of the poem say). I am not. I appreciate a bird's song just not that early in the morning.

A Minor Bird
By Robert Frost
I have wished a bird would fly away,
And not sing by my house all day;
Have clapped my hands at him from the door
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.
The fault must partly have been in me.
The bird was not to blame for his key.
And of course there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.
-------
Silencing a song. That brings me to another thing I wrote earlier this week. It is a bit more serious and touches a part deep within me. Deep within a lot of artists. Unfortunately, artists are subject to a lot of nay sayers. People, usually close to them, doing everything they can to silence their song. They hear it in phrases like this - "art doesn't make money" and "why don't you be a doctor instead". The thing is, artists are born to create. They are the life givers in society. To silence that part of their lives snuffs them out. Ideas are constantly downloading, but without a way to express it, they will never fully experience life. There is this saying - Impression without expression = depression. Instead of being a quencher of a fire that burns inside of the artist, be a supporter. Fan the flame. Let them sing their song. An artist can make a living doing their art. It is usually a lack of support, guilt and shame that keeps them from being able:
-------
This bird has tried to not sing,
but to no avail and that is a good thing.
Why, you ask, would a bird try not to sing?
One too many times the bird was shushed.
One two many times danger entered the woods.
Why did this bird choose to sing anyway?
Because the song that was in her was too big to hold in and despite the fear of how it might sound or how it might draw the enemy near she chose to let the song burst out.
And to her surprise, it not only made her strong and fearless, it also made all the other birds sing too.
