This carved stone angel has had his forelorn gaze fixed upon an adjacent wooden statue of Jesus on the cross that has been a fixture at the Palace Of The Popes in Avignon, France for centuries. One cannot help but be consumed by emotion and reverence when seeing this ancient angel's, and the other three angels, expressions. Their frozen expressions cause a passerby to pause and wonder not just at what they are looking at or feeling. When you look up to see the larger than life statue of Jesus on the cross the beauty of the artistry and the meaning behind all the images takes your breath away.
