Description
This nest is a real nest, but the eggs are not real. They look like Cowbird eggs; which is fitting as Cowbirds lay their eggs in other bird's nests, but they usually only lay one egg. I guess they are in a hurry and don't want to get caught.
I took this Robin's nest from my yard, planted the faux eggs in it and have it displayed by my front door. I have had Chickadees come by and peck at the eggs and steal some of the woven grass from the nest or check it out as if to want to nest in it themselves. Perhaps the birdhouse that is also displayed there is of interest to them. It could work quite well for them, but in the end they just fly away.
There's lots of activity from birds around that nest because I also have a water feature nearby. Many different kinds of birds stop by for a drink. Including several different kinds of hummingbirds that have nests in a nearby cedar tree. I've even had a Blue Heron stop by. He was stealing my fish. Most times birds stop by for a drink or a bath. I never dreamed that I was creating an oasis for birds when I put the water feature in. I just wanted a natural looking water feature by my front door.
Quite amusing.
