Description
Early one morning, while getting my kids ready for school, I heard this owl hooting outside my bedroom window. Although he was very attentive to my movements, he did not budge. Walking slowly, I got as close to him as I dared. Just before I took this photos of him, he had eaten a mouse for breakfast. I got a photo of him eating it, but it turned out blurry. We would have a rodent problem if it wasn't for my most accommodating neighbors. Not just mice, rats, and shrews, but rabbits too. Now if he would just hunt those blasted moles, he would be the perfect neighbor.
I like this photo because everything seems to be pointing to the subject and because the foreground is distinctly separated from the background.
I'm happy to have him in my backyard. We see a lot more of this guy since the ten acre forest behind our house was de-treed of almost every tree. He has lived there for a couple of years now. I was worried he would go away because his habitat was severely altered.
Occasionally I see its mate. Sometimes their hooting sounds like a Kookaburra's laugh. Around the same time as this photo was taken, I heard a different owl sound. A smaller and younger sound. It was probably a baby owl. I have not yet seen the baby owl, but I'm keeping my eyes and ears open.
