Description
This is an "American Gothic" style portrait of my brother and sister-in-law. They are both avid fishermen. I couldn't think of a better way to do their portrait than to do a parody of the famous American Gothic painting, but with a fisherman's twist to it.
My intention was to paint them realistically, but with a characteristic and humorous twist. Initially, I wanted to add a King Fisher bird and other things to tell their story better, but decided in the end to keep it more simple.
I used four different photos to achieve this painting. The two were never together in any of the shots as one of them is the photographer for the other when out fishing together. The wife was one of the photos (she was kneeling instead of standing), I used a photo for my brother's clothing, another for the positioning of his arm and how he holds the rod, and another for his expression. I studied about twenty photos in all.
My brother lives, eats, and breathes the fisherman's lifestyle. He was very fortunate to find a woman who loves fishing as much as he does and, of course, their kids love fishing too.
Recently, they moved to Alaska for a few years. If they aren't working, they're fishing.
They are a very happy couple.
